SUMMARY:National Hiking Day
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS NATIONAL HIKING DAY?\n\n\n\nAlso known as “Take A Hike Day\,” National Hiking Day on November 17 may be one of the most important holidays out there. Why? For starters\, there’s more than 60\,000 miles of trails across the nation. Not to mention\, hiking is great exercise allowing you to burn over 550 calories per hour. Plus\, being in the outdoors allows you to get away from your phone and appreciate nature’s beauty and wonder.  \n\n\n\nHISTORY OF NATIONAL HIKING DAY\n\n\n\nHiking wasn’t always the fashionable pastime it is today. Before the Subarus and the Jeeps and the Patagonias built an industry around the activity\, walking – of any kind – was considered an activity for the impoverished or the vagrant. Until the Romantic era of the Victorian years inspired the likes of Walden and Thoreau to reconnect with nature and that\, in turn\, inspired the landscape architects to design parks with excellent walking trails (looking at you Frederick Law Olmsted of Central Park fame). Walking then became something of the educated\, the unhurried\, the luxurious.  \n\n\n\nUntil John Muir came along and walked his way through the Sierra Nevadas in California and demanded that not only hiking\, walking\, meandering\, sojourning\, whatever you want to call it be accessible to every American citizen\, but that the country should actively preserve natural areas of pristine ecology and beauty. So in 1890 he petitioned for the creation of the National Park System and we were endowed with “America’s best idea” – Yosemite and Sequoia National Park.  \n\n\n\nBut even before Muir\, on the east coast a small group of people had banded together in 1876 to form the Appalachian Mountain Club\, which had a goal to protect and preserve all hiking trails along the historic mountain range\, as well as develop new ones.  \n\n\n\nSo whether you prefer to hit the jogging trails in Central Park or are prepping to backpack the entire Pacific Crest Trail\, every step on a trail is with a long line of explorers\, trailblazers\, and activists from before.

SUMMARY:2022 National Trails Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 National Trails Workshop will be three days of learning\, collaboration\, and networking amongst seasoned trails and tourism professionals\, emerging leaders and people who are interested in getting involved with trails in their communities and across the nation. With a particular emphasis on learning from and with Indigenous communities\, the workshop will provide opportunities to grow your trails skillset\, collaboratively confront issues facing trails\, and co-create solutions for specific and system-wide problems. \n\n\n\nAs we convene for the National Trails Workshop in-person for the first time in three years\, we will offer a variety of  formal sessions that will produce actionable results and free-form or impromptu exchange and co-creation. Participants will leave sessions with drafts or completed versions of tools\, documents\, or strategies to apply what they learned to their trails. Additionally\, participants will have the opportunity to learn from a vast network of trails professionals through structured discussion roundtables and ‘free space’ for peer exchange. Whether you are new to trails or are a seasoned trail professional\, there will be something for you. \n\n\n\nRegistration is Sold Out  \n\n\n\nThe Workshop event is at capacity. We are working with the venue to determine if additional seats may be available. If you would like to add your name to the waitlist to be notified if any registration slots open up\, please email Cara@pnts.org with your name\, affiliation\, and what type of ticket you are interested in. You will be notified later in the week if we are able to accommodate you.

SUMMARY:World Mental Health Day
DESCRIPTION:Annually\, World Mental Health Day on October 10th raises awareness and mobilizes efforts to support mental health. \n\n\n\nMental health is a hot topic. This is good news. It means the stigma for mental health issues is slowly going away. Mental health issues are finally getting the attention they deserve. Healthcare workers and individuals feel they can discuss mental health more openly. However\, that doesn’t mean there isn’t still work to do\, however. \n\n\n\nAs a whole\, we often misunderstand mental health because it is hard to define. Additionally\, mental health includes several areas. These areas involve one’s social\, emotional\, and psychological well-being. Mental health affects thoughts\, feelings\, and actions. When we have positive mental health\, we handle stress better\, our productivity remains stable\, and we realize our full potential. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE #MentalHealthDay\n\n\n\nWhile not everyone faces a life with mental health issues\, mental health impacts all of us. That’s why discussing mental health with your loved ones is a vital part of this observance. \n\n\n\nThe World Federation for Mental Health organizes World Mental Health Day. Each year\, organizations host a variety of events all around the world to increase awareness about mental health issues. Events include educational seminars\, free mental health screenings\, walk-a-thons\, marathons\, conferences\, mass media promotions\, and public service announcements. \n\n\n\nIf you know someone who struggles with a mental health disorder\, World Mental Health Day is a great way to reach out to them. While many people don’t feel comfortable talking to others about their diagnosis\, knowing they have someone to reach out to makes a real difference. You can also donate to an organization that advocates for mental health. A few include the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) and the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. If you think you might have a mental health disorder or are at a high risk of getting one\, schedule an appointment with your doctor. \n\n\n\nYou can also discover more about the advancement of mental healthcare. \n\n\n\nShare this day on social media with #WorldMentalHealthDay.

SUMMARY:National Walk to A Park Day
DESCRIPTION:Public parks and green spaces are a community’s backyard. They offer nearby residents a place to play\, connect\, and reap the benefits of the outdoors. That’s why National Walk to a Park Day on October 10th encourages us to walk to our local parks. Feel the wind on your face. Take in the fall weather. Visit with neighbors. Play with your children. And appreciate all the benefits green spaces offer communities. \n\n\n\nParks are an essential part of improving public health. They provide a place to play\, exercise\, and commune with nature. They support equitable and thriving communities. And they protect communities from the impacts of the climate. Yet\, 100 million people\, including 28 million kids\, do not have access to a quality park within a 10-minute walk from home. \n\n\n\nNational Walk to a Park Day is not only a celebration of green spaces but is a call to action for cities to ensure everyone across the U.S. has access to a quality park within a 10-minute walk of their home. \n\n\n\nAs part of this national day\, walk to your local park\, encourage your community to support more public parks and green spaces\, too. \n\n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE #WalkToAParkDay\n\n\n\nOn National Walk to a Park Day\, you’ll find many ways to celebrate. The first step is to step out of your home! Invite family\, friends\, and neighbors to join you. Add events to make your day at the park fun and memorable: \n\n\n\nWalk your favorite route to your local park.Bring sporting equipment – frisbees\, balls\, gloves.Pack a picnic lunch.Host a community event.Bring a book or art materials.\n\n\n\nAnd don’t forget\, public parks include playgrounds\, beaches\, trails\, and some schoolyards. Capture your celebration in pictures and video and share them on social media\, too. Tag them with #WalkToAParkDay and @10MinWalk and join the conversation! \n\n\n\nNATIONAL WALK TO A PARK DAY HISTORY\n\n\n\nThe Trust for Public Land launched the 10-Minute Walk Campaign on 10/10/2017\, a movement that calls on mayors to ensure that everyone in US cities has access to a quality park within a 10-minute walk of their home. By 2021\, the Campaign generated nearly 300 pledges from mayors across the country to increase park access for its residents. That same year\, The Trust for Public Land founded National Walk to a Park Day on October 10th to further the campaign and focus on the importance green spaces play in our lives. \n\n\n\nThe 10-Minute Walk Campaign accelerates the creation of parks that drive equitable\, healthy\, and thriving communities by calling on mayors to ensure that everyone in cities in the U.S. has access to a quality park within a 10-minute walk of their home. \n\n\n\nThe Registrar at National Day Calendar proclaimed the first National Walk to A Park Day in 2021 to be celebrated on October 10th annually.
