The American Perimeter Trail's mission has gone International. Some of you may have seen the APT message on National News or Nationally Syndicated Radio. There will be more of that to come as we broaden the greater APT Community. We have always had Members/Builders from other countries and for that we are grateful. We have now begun to share our vision with the world.
Hiiker, our partners in Ireland, maintain data for hundreds of trails used by hundreds of thousands of hikers all around the world. I began a conversation with Hiiker in February of 2021. At the time I was thru-hiking and mapping The APT. It wasn't until after finishing the APT that I could dedicate more effort to this single project. The APT will be released in segments over the course of the Summer. I thank the whole team that made this possible. We will continue to make announcements as the APT goes live on all your favorite hiking apps.
We are also pleased to bring to you our interactive map that is now live at https://americanperimetertrail.org/interactive-map/ that displays
various regions we are scouting for a new and lasting route. I am thankful for the encouragement of the greater APT Community to release The APT route and its alternates for public review. So far we have had plenty of useful feedback to further our design. This allows us to better identify possible corridors for trail building and conservation. Please continue to send us feedback and we will pass it on to our team. We will be updating the map with new routes in July. We are pleased to hear that distance backpackers are already using this resource for travel.
A number of organizations have joined in partner with the APTC from various regions around the country. I am working now to sure up these relationships so we can bring new trail to regions everywhere. You can find some of this information on our website under "about the trail/ regions or states ". Get involved locally and affect the conversation nationally.
Our store has been revamped. You will find never before offered products and we will keep some of your favorite merch in rotation. All proceeds go to The APTC 501c3. Thank you Suzanne for all your hard work!
I personally look forward to taking some time off trail so that I may better serve our mission. I said off trail, not off work. It's been four years of continuous scouting, backpacking and creating the APTC. Consider contributing to The APTC to celebrate American Perimeter Trail Day on July 15. This is the day it all began back in 2019.
And you already know what I am going to say next.

Trail Geometry – We would like to thank the following contributors for their contributions to the APT Trail Geometry.
  • The trail geometry wouldn’t be possible without the existing geometry for National trails such as the Pacific Crest Trail, Pacific Northwest Trail, Florida Trail, North Country Trail, Great Eastern Trail, and many others. Our thanks go to the contributors to those trails.
  • Additionally, thanks to Rue McKenrick for his invaluable GPS track of the APT route.
  • Thanks to Eoin Hamilton of Hiiker for his advice and support.
  • Thanks to the contributors and editors of Open Street Map (OSM) which was the base geometry and related information for our connector routes. We used the Komoot app to create those connector hiking routes which uses OSM data.
  • Thanks also to the creators and contributors for the open source QGIS Geographic Information System which was used to manage and edit the geometry in preparation for publishing the interactive map.
  • Tim McGrath was the Geographer and Editor for the trail data.
Web Map App – We would like to thank the following folks for their help and contributions to getting the interactive web map up and running.
  • Scott Parks of postholer.com for his huge software engineering contribution and coding guidance to the Leaflet map.
  • Rue McKenrick reviewed the geometry and provided partner trail information and other routing advice.
  • Jim Meacham for his advice on map styling and cartography.
  • The creators and contributors to the open-source Leaflet mapping code.
  • The creators and contributors of the Flatgeobuf geographic data format.
  • Tim McGrath was the Geographer and other software engineer.
