We celebrate with you a productive summer at The American Perimeter Trail Conference.
One of the best decisions we made over two years ago was to embark on website development. At the time we were hosting a free site with very limited capacity. This is the website I had created before leaving Bend, OR in 2019 to hike The APT. I was fortunate that an employee at Oregon Adaptive Sports saw the value in creating more recreational space everywhere across America. They quickly got a website live with my oversight. This was the creation of the American Perimeter Trail Project.

I had four main goals. To scout and collect information on what would become the APT. Share the message of the conservation movement far and wide. Create The Conference and a path to Membership/Buildership. Finally, make all of the recreational materials available to the public. The website development and design were not on the list. I simply did not see a way to raise funds and a team to create, design, and provide continued maintenance of a site.

That is when I began speaking with WordPress. One day I received an email from one of its founders asking for a meeting. I did not take the email seriously until I was able to authenticate its intentions. What I would find is that The American Perimeter Trail was reaching into the hearts, minds, and imaginations of people everywhere. From there I began working with a team from WP to create a website that was deserving of the monumental task at hand. One that would allow for Members to find and discuss information on-line. It is available at www.americanperimetertrail.org In a relatively short amount of time the concept of the APT was growing teeth but there was still much work to realize the initial purpose.

The Conference was formed and I began mapping out the route for public sharing. Early this summer with priceless contributions from our Geography Team, Tim McGrath and Suzanne Binelli we were able to provide The APT route for the first time. This information is on our interactive map at https://americanperimetertrail.org/interactive-map/

I had developed a relationship with one of the founders of the hiking app Hiiker while I was still backpacking The APT. After the interactive map and corresponding gpx files were created we turned our gaze to application development. Here is where things got very interesting. The goal was to do something that had never been done before. The APT information would be available for FREE to everyone. We got a lot of push back from app companies because the project was simply too big or rather long. The longest trail on most apps is under 3,000 miles long and we were developing a 15,000 mile long hiking app. Well, Folks…
CONGRATULATIONS WE DID IT!

You can find the ten trail segments at https://hiiker.app/
The final segment for New England is being loaded even as you read this. The app uses satellite gps capability so you will always know where you are. There are different base maps to choose from.

Are you planning on a picnic or a multi month APT experience? There are tens of thousands of waypoints for you to easily find your way to accommodations such as: bus stops; camping; water; shelter; viewpoints; historical interest; pubs; restaurants, grocery stores; post office; lodging; peaks; healthcare; and campsites. You can even open cycle maps right from the convenience of your mobile devices.

The APTC is proud of the out of the box projects we have taken on so early in our existence. The sky is the limit. The first decade of The APT is going to be really fun. Why? Because we will be having huge developments and big reveals at a quickened pace. We are volunteers at the APTC and are only able to complete such exciting and history making projects with your financial support. And you already know what I am going to say next.
