Hello, APTC Community! My name is Aaron Owens Mayhew and I’m an ultralight long-distance backpacker and a registered dietitian with over 20 years of experience in nutrition and the backcountry.  I’m writing today as the newest member of the APTC team supporting Rue’s mission to build the trail. Several folks in the hiking community reached out to me over the last year to share Rue’s story and his struggle with staying well-nourished while on the trail. I’m thrilled to share that Rue, Leilah, and I recently developed a nutrition plan to help keep Rue healthy during these last 3,000 miles. We also recently created a new Amazon food wish list. With your support, Leilah will be able to prepare lightweight, nutrition-packed meals for Rue’s resupply boxes that will keep him well-fueled for the duration of his trip.

Aaron Owens Mayhew is an ultralight, long-distance backpacking dietitian who left her clinical nutrition job in 2017 to thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail. As a result of that life-changing experience, she started her own business, Backcountry Foodie, an online platform providing backpackers with nutritious, lightweight recipes, meal planning tools, videos, downloadable nutrition resources, and virtual masterclasses. She’s passionate about her work and is thrilled to be a part of the APTC team by providing nutrition guidance as Rue completes the APT.
