North Carolina has many recreational opportunities but there is still plenty of work to do for preservation sake. Routes in N.C. include connecting 6,684 feet Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi River to 6,643 feet Clingmans Dome the highest point in The Great Smoky Mountains.
From Clingmans Dome in the Smoky Mountains National Park to The Atlantic Ocean. The MST, like all long distance trails, is continually changing as communities get involved, new trail opens, and routes shift.

Formed in 1980, the nonprofit Benton MacKaye Trail Association (BMTA) was tasked with constructing, maintaining and preserving the Benton MacKaye Trail (BMT) – to leave “a footpath for generations to follow”.
The Great Eastern Trail is a project of the Great Eastern Trail Association, working with the American Hiking Society and local trail partners, to create a trail from Alabama to New York.
